The new tariffs (tariffs 3 & 4) will help offset the indexed increases in standard fares by allowing a group of five or more people to save money by booking one vehicle for their trip.
An important part of the process has been to give the travelling public more options while reflecting the on-going costs of running taxis in difficult economic times.
The State Government and the Taxi Council have worked together on the move, which is designed to encourage taxi operators to enter the multi-seat end of the market and to provide better value for money to passengers.
There are also associated environmental benefits derived from having fewer cars on our roads.
A 5.26 per cent rise in taxi fares based on increases in the cost of providing taxi services from January 2008 ˆ February 2009 will also be applied from September 1.
The fare increase is based on the Taxi Cost Index, developed in collaboration with the taxi industry and is the first increase in South Australian taxi fares for almost 18 months.
South Australia is still among the most affordable States, ranking either the second or third lowest when compared with the rest of the nation.
Fares not only cover the cost of trips but they keep people employed in uncertain times and also help taxi companies provide the best level of service possible
